What makes white crockery so special
☕🫙🍽️ Can you imagine a traditional white china cabinet combined with more youthful and colourful pieces? I can!
Yesterday, I was leafing through Josh Young's book Artful Home and I was amazed at the amount of white ceramics, especially Chinese porcelain, that he has in his personal collection. From soupeiros, stock jars, baking and serving dishes to plates and vases - all used as decoration in his huge home in Chicago.
This made me think of something: I love filling my home with colour, but I can't do without the airiness and freshness that neutral colours, when used wisely, can add to interior decoration and table settings.
What's more, white porcelain and ceramics are versatile and playful enough to combine with more vibrant colours such as pink, lilac, green or blue. And they look great, for example, at a more formal reception for work friends or for a wedding dinner or lunch. And just imagine how stunning they'd look with crystal glasses!
White crockery can really elevate the sophistication of your table setting, without feeling over the top.So, if you're setting up your china cabinet for the first time, I'd suggest going for a complete set of white crockery.
And when I say "complete", I'm not talking about a single set of 30 pieces, okay? When choosing your crockery, you need to have the same logic as when you go shopping for clothes or accessories to fill a gap in your wardrobe.
Ask yourself:
Can I see myself wearing this at least three times in the next three years?
Does it fit in with my routine and lifestyle, or is it just wishful thinking?
And what's the best way to care for it? If it's not dishwasher safe, are you happy to wash it by hand? And if you're thinking of using it in the oven, is that something you'd actually do? Can it handle the heat?
And would it go with at least three other items I already have on my table or in my kitchen?
And don't worry about making them all the same - mix and match to your heart's content!
Mix and match makes the user experience so much more creative because it encourages you to make combinations.
Hey, you might be wondering about the book. To be honest, I'm not able to recommend it at the moment. I really admire Josh Young's work, but I'm afraid the book is just a decorative item with beautiful, inspiring photographs. I personally prefer interior design books that have a good balance of reading material and photographs, as I find it more helpful to learn from the author's insights.
With all due respect to Josh's work, but to see inspiring photographs, I'd rather use Pinterest than pay 36 pounds for a book.
